IKEA stores are huge—so huge, that you can really play orienteering there! It’s now coming up in China—this month in Foshan, Guangdong Province—and it’s an indoor race!

Better orienteering indoors in southern China’s summer heat?

The indoor race will take place in two sessions, on 14 and 22 August respectively. Foshan is a city in the south of China, not far from Hong Kong. Given it’s August, the subtropical climate means it’s pretty hot right now at around 25-30 degrees Celsius.

Indoor orienteering means runners can avail of the air conditioning indoors. They can choose to compete individually or as a team. Prizes are sponsored by the Foshan IKEA store.

Not the first time with IKEA orienteering?

Apparently this is not the first time an indoor orienteering race has been conducted inside an IKEA store. Klagenfurt, Austria has had an annual IKEA competition from 2013 to at least 2016, although it appears to be a mixed indoor-outdoor race.

Sweden, home of IKEA and the most prominent orienteering country in the world, has meanwhile yet to see an indoor orienteering competition inside IKEA, although it does have a lot of indoor races, including an annual one in Stockholm.
