Advent calendar 2020: 12. Seoul, South Korea

Seoul, the largest city and capital of South Korea, has a population of around 10 million.

The city has been a capital of Korea since the ancient times, as a result boasting five UNESCO World Heritage Sites. It’s a major centre of traditional and modern Korean culture, attracting visitors worldwide.

The main attractions in Seoul are the many palaces and mountains in the area. Korean cuisine is another major draw of the city—not only restaurants, but Seoul also boasts a lot of street food stalls. Of course, remember to try the Korean BBQ restaurants.

The cityscape of Seoul has been improving with initiatives such as the Cheonggyecheon stream. Moreover, despite the hustle and bustle, it’s actually a highly walkable city with many neighbourhoods and parks that are safe and pleasant to walk.

South Korea has been a member of the International Orienteering Federation since 1979. Seoul hosted the Asian Orienteering Championships and Asia-Pacific Orienteering Championships 2008. The Asian Orienteering Championships will be held in South Korea again in 2022, although in Pohang in the southeast of the country.

Philippines is a tropical archipelago nation to the south of China, with high mountains, beaches, volcanoes and rainforest. For centuries it was a Spanish colony, and this left much cultural heritage in the Philippines; the majority of the population is Catholic.

The national orienteering federation of the Philippines joined the International Orienteering Federation in 2020.

Chiang Mai is Thailand’s metropolis of the north.

With a comfortable, walkable urban core, plenty of outdoor activity opportunities, numerous venues for social activities, and affordable lifestyle, Chiang Mai is a favourite city for Thais and internationals alike.

Besides the many temples in the city, Chiang Mai is a base for exploring the mountains in the country’s north, as well as understanding the culture of the hill tribes in the area.

Last year we cooperated with the Thailand Orienteering Federation to organise the Thailand International Orienteering Championship in Chiang Mai. Stay tuned for more orienteering news in Thailand.
