Brief introduction to the venue
Cultural backgroundThere is a saying of “seven rivers and eight islands” in Tai’an town. Once upon a time, there was a high mound in the southwest of Tai’an, which had no name before. It was said that the Phoenix in the sky passed by here and saw that the vegetation on the top of the pier was very luxuriant, so he fell down to rest. The Phoenix Island, where Jinwan dam is located, is the site of the ancient Dongwan dam in history. The gudongwan dam is a kind of “rolling dam”, which can not only block water but also be navigable. This is a great invention and creation of the ancient working people. The poet used “water linked to the sky, island has fairy, forest boundless, birds dance!” to describe the beautiful Phoenix Island.
Geographic background There are 81 species of birds belonging to 26 families in Phoenix Island, including 7 species of national class II protected animals, 9 orders, 16 families, 67 species of fishes, 6 orders, 8 families and 12 species of mammals, 1 order, 4 families, 6 species of amphibians, 2 orders, 7 families and 15 species of reptiles, 159 species of zooplankton, 38 species of zoobenthos, and 104 species of 90 genera and 43 families of higher plants. The main vegetation communities are divided into Phragmites australis community, Artemisia argyi community, Alternanthera philoxeroides community and Zia latifolia group In addition, it is also found that there are three types of communities.Phoenix island is located in Jinba village, Tai’an Town, northeast suburb of Guangling District, Yangzhou city. It is a national agricultural tourism demonstration site, a national 3A tourism area and a provincial forest park in Jiangsu Province. The river, river and lake are connected here, the water and the sky are the same; the grass is deep and the forest is dense, and the flowers and trees are mixed; the reed flowers are flying along the water and birds are chasing each other, which is the most perfect River Island wetland landscape on the Yangtze Huaihe plain and even along the Beijing Hangzhou Grand Canal.
Technological backgroundThe core area is rich in terrain and vegetation, with dense terrain and river network, numerous islands, strong similarity and good vegetation condition, which can design better route selection; The site has high vegetation coverage, little topographic relief, limited vision in some areas and good running performance. However, the site is more selective, so it is difficult to find a point.
SummaryPhoenix Island National Wetland Park has obvious cultural and natural characteristics. It not only shows the ecological characteristics of “seven rivers and eight islands” in Tai’an, the “exquisite and elegant” cultural characteristics of Yangzhou and the characteristics of Yangzhou summer tourism season, but also has rich terrain, vegetation and artificial features, high similarity, moderate site difficulty, high overall selectivity of the competition route design, and “heart moves up the map and body” when running in the field “Swimming in the painting” has a special flavor.

BREAKING: Hong Kong cancels all orienteering events in 2020 – here’s what you need to know

Posted on
Hong Kong is becoming a major orienteering hub as the sport becomes trendier in Asia.

Hong Kong is seeing a resurgence in cases which the media calls “the third wave” of the pandemic. Therefore, the Orienteering Association of Hong Kong has announced the cancellation of all orienteering events in the rest of 2020.

This means that the Hong Kong Annual Orienteering Championships, originally to take place around Christmas and an important highlight for the local orienteering community, are cancelled this year.

Can I still travel to Hong Kong for orienteering?

Not at this moment – the borders are closed to international travellers at least until mid-September. Even for Hong Kong residents, there is a mandatory 14-day quarantine if they return from outside Mainland China, Macau or Taiwan.

What happens after September is not entirely clear yet. While all OAHK events are cancelled, there might still be club events around, subject to restrictions on public group activities. Please pay attention to announcements on travel restrictions.

How will ORIEN.ASIA events be affected?

  • We are reconsidering the arrangements of our events in Hong Kong coming December, and will announce in due course.
  • Indonesian events in November (Jakarta City Race and WRE) are now cancelled. We are continuously updating information on our websites.
  • Thailand events, including Bangkok City Race and Thailand International Orienteering Championship 2020, will continue. You may be able to participate depending on loosening of travel restrictions by the Thai government. Please stay tuned to our newest updates.

A different summer for Asian orienteering

A different summer for Asian orienteering

The coronavirus pandemic is still raging and Asian countries continue to be vigilant. Orienteering activities have not completely resumed, and are at the mercy of the pandemic and the related restrictions. Here are some developments in Asia during the summer:

1. Next Asian Championships in 2022 continue to be in South Korea

Like most major events sanctioned by the International Orienteering Federation (IOF), the Asian Championships (AsOC) are also directly postponed to the next time slot, which in this case means 2022. South Korea continues to organise the rescheduled AsOC, planned for May 2022.

It’s highly likely, but not explicitly confirmed, that AsOC 2022 will also be held in Pohang on the east coast, as originally planned for 2020.

2. New pandemic wave affects orienteering

The second wave of coronavirus is ravaging the world (Hongkongers pointedly call it the third wave as the first wave came from Mainland China). This means that governments are tightening restrictions again, casting doubt on restarting orienteering activities.

In Hong Kong, for example, this worry has caused the cancellation or postponement of many events, previously scheduled for this summer.

Local events at a smaller scale, however, are still likely to be allowed and ongoing. Taiwan, for example, has relatively few restrictions and continue to see regular orienteering meetups, for example a drunk orienteering event (!) by Moxina last Saturday, 11 July.

3. Travel still restricted, but talks on travel corridors are hopeful

European countries are reopening borders to restart travel, and orienteering is restarting in Europe. Asian countries, however, tend to be more cautious and resist temptations to relax restrictions too early.

So, the announcement from the IOF that World Ranking Events (WRE) will be allowed again from 1 August, will probably be of little use to Asian WRE events. Talks on travel corridors, whereby citizens of countries with low infection rates are allowed to visit each other, are under way, though, such as the one between Thailand and Hong Kong that was reported on the latter’s South China Morning Post.

Right now, orienteering events in Asia are exclusively catered to local orienteers, and every opportunity to practice the sport is well appreciated and treasured.

Take care of each other, and stay safe

It’ll be a long fight against the coronavirus, and many will lose their livelihoods and become psychologically burdened, if not starving. It’s not just about viruses and surgical masks—take care of each other, and stay safe!
